The University of Wisconsin-Superior will hold its commencement on Saturday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at Siinto S. Wessman Arena on the UW-Superior campus. Diana Chi will serve as commencement speaker.

Chi grew up in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong with the official language English. Her mother worked as a registered nurse and her father as a dentist. Baptized Catholic at age seven with French godparents, she began learning the language in the fifth grade. Thanks to a sponsorship, the family would later immigrate to Seattle.

In 1971, Chi was among the largest group of more than 60 Chinese students from Hon Kong that UW-Superior had ever accepted. Her French proficiency was deemed at a junior level. As a double-major in communicating arts and French, Chi earned her bachelor's degree, with honors, in three years among the graduating class of 1974. Thanks to the Board of Regents and donors, she received a graduate assistantship to continue her education in communicating arts.

Chi held a variety of positions within the media, which includes time at KBJR-TV in Duluth. Chi made her mark at KTLA-TV from August of 1986 until December 2019. Through those 33 years, she was honored with three Emmys, five Golden Mikes and three Mark Twain Associated Press awards for Best Writing. Chi donated nine of those 11 awards to the Communicating Arts Department at UW-Superior.

A live video feed will also be available the day of the ceremony. Siinto S. Wessman Arena is located at 2701 Catlin Ave. in Superior.
