Meet Cass in National Skills Week

As part of National Skills Week 2022, we are sharing the wonderful stories of our own apprentice and trainees.

Meet Cassandra Malupi, an apprentice electrician at Newman Operations. She's two years into her four year electrical apprenticeship.

Cass joined BHP as a trades assistant with Operations Services in 2020, before she decided to apply for an apprenticeship.

"At first, I didn't know what trade to focus on so I asked one of the boilermakers I was working with for advice. He said if he ever had the opportunity to do another apprenticeship it would be electrical, and that sold me," Cass said.

For Cass, a typical work day starts with a thorough handover from the outgoing crew, before going straight into a pre-start meeting.

"After pre-start we're assigned a tradie to work with for that day, we take a look at the work orders that have come in and see what work we have to do," Cass explained.

"We go and pick up the relevant parts and then get on with our day. At the end, we make sure all the tools and rubbish and are put away, do handover with the incoming crew and head home."

One thing Cass loves about the trade is that it's so vast and there are so many different areas to move into for people seeking a change.

"After I finish my apprenticeship, my goal is to stay in Fixed Plant for a few years to get more exposure and experience to the operation," Cass said. "One of the good things about working for BHP is the global nature of the operation, and moving to another operation is something I'd definitely consider in the longer term."
