Vienna,2021-09-09 - While the Austrian labour market was still strongly affected by COVID-19 in the first quarter of 2021, the situation eased in the second quarter. The recovery was stimulated by the opening steps from 19 Mai 2021 onwards when gastronomy, hotels, sports, leisure and cultural facilities were allowed to reopen after more than half a year. According to Statistics Austria's labour force survey, 4 247 100 employed persons were recorded in the second quarter of 2021 (+57 200 compared to the previous quarter), 296 400 persons were looking for work according to the new EU definition (-64 000). Also for the number of job vacancies a positive trend is observable: In the second quarter of 2021, job vacancies increased by 23.9% to 138 600 compared to the previous quarter. The return to 'normality' is also evident in the place of work: Every fifth employed person worked from home in the second quarter 2021, most of them due to Corona (6.7 percentage points below the first quarter).
