"I want to thank Eversource and the community for their work in making the I Street Harborwalk Park a reality," said state Rep. David Biele. "With connections to the Boston Harborwalk, this incredible open space will increase use and enjoyment along our waterways and I look forward to seeing residents and families enjoy the natural resources along the Reserve Channel and the South Boston Waterfront."
"Making this segment of the Boston Harborwalk a continuous piece really does a lot for the whole city," said President and CEO of Boston Harbor Now Kathy Abbott. "It's really important to making the waterfront, South Boston, the Reserve Channel, and the work of the port accessible to everybody."
"We're grateful for the support of local officials and community groups like Boston Harbor Now, the Friends of the Boston Harborwalk, and the Friends of North of Broadway as we worked toward our shared vision of creating greater access to South Boston's vibrant waterfront," said Eversource Vice President of Station Operations and Field Engineering Mark Blanchard. "We're proud of the safer, more beautiful and usable public green space we've been able to create through this strong partnership, and we look forward to continued work with the community to turn this former industrial area into a welcoming and family-friendly space for generations to come."
As part of the rehabilitation project, Eversource planted six new trees, added groundcover, and installed guardrail extensions as an additional safety measure to help create the new I Street Harborwalk Park. The work took place on two portions of the energy company's property between East 1st Street and Summer Street in South Boston and provides a continuous path along the Reserve Channel - creating a continuous ½ mile along a portion of the Harborwalk that was previously two segments.
On the evening of Thursday, July 22, the Friends of the Boston Harborwalk and the Friends of North of Broadway joined Eversource to host a grand reopening celebration, which featured entertainment, refreshments and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
