A further 16 Irish citizens and dependents evacuated from Afghanistan

Statement

21 October 2021

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney T.D., has announced that 16 additional Irish citizens and their dependents have been successfully evacuated from Kabul, Afghanistan.

The 10 citizens and six dependents arrived in Doha late last night (Wed 20 October) on a specially organised flight. They have been met by a consular team in Doha who are assessing their needs before they travel on to Ireland.

Minister Coveney said:

"The successful evacuation of a further 16 Irish citizens and their dependants means that 106 citizens and direct family members have been evacuated from Afghanistan since the crisis began. This is testament to our teams, in our Embassy in Abu Dhabi, in the region and in Dublin, who have worked tirelessly through diplomatic channels to assist people to leave Afghanistan. I would like to thank the Government of Qatar for their continued assistance on these flights.

"We are in contact with the limited number of Irish citizens and their dependents who remain in Afghanistan and who wish to leave. We will continue to work with our key partners to secure their safe passage out of Afghanistan."
