Lancaster General Hospital Gets 'A' for Patient Safety

Lancaster General Hospital Nationally Recognized with an 'A' for the Spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

May 10, 2022

Lancaster General Hospital was awarded an 'A' in the spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing LGH's achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. Lancaster General Hospital was one of six Penn Medicine health system hospitals to receive an 'A' grade for spring 2022.

The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on health care safety, assigns an 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D' or 'F' grade to all general hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care. The spring 2022 Hospital Safety Grade represents the largest set of hospitals ever graded with grades assigned to nearly 3,000 facilities. The Safety Grades reflect performance on more than 22 evidence-based measures of patient safety. Only 33% of hospitals nationwide received 'A' grade.

"To once again be recognized as an 'A' hospital demonstrates that patient safety and highly reliable health care is a continuous priority at Lancaster General Hospital and throughout the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health system," said John J. Herman, CEO at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. "We are proud to receive this national recognition affirming our commitment to provide high-quality, safe care our patients and our community expect and deserve."

"As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of Lancaster General Hospital for sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "An 'A' Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud."

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is advised by a national expert panel of leading patient safety authorities from across the country and receives guidance from the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. Grades are updated biannually in the fall and in the spring.
