UNITED STATES - As reported online by usatoday.com, Honda has initiated a recall of more than 1.6 million Honda and Acura vehicles for replacement of faulty Takata airbag inflators that pose a risk of harm or death.

Honda recently recalled more than 1.6 million Honda and Acura vehicles that have a faulty Takata airbag inflator. This recall is the fifth and final phase of all planned recalls, and Honda is ahead of schedule by approximately six months according to the timeline established by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Honda's recent recall affects certain Honda and Acura vehicles for model years 2003 to 2015. These vehicles received replacement Takata airbag inflators before February 2017 that were manufactured by Takata. The most recent recall was necessary to once again replace the airbag inflators, but new airbag inflators to be replaced are manufactured by a company other than Takata.

Honda is urging all owners of the affected Honda and Acura vehicles to immediately schedule repairs to have the defective Takata airbag inflators replaced free of charge. Honda asserts that all replacement parts are available for install. Additionally, Honda is offering free rental cars for owners to use while their vehicles are being repaired.

Overall, the Takata airbag recalls have affected a vast majority of automakers throughout the world. The multiple recalls forced Takata into bankruptcy in 2017, which has slowed down the process for affected vehicles to receive replacement airbag inflators that have proven to be deadly to drivers and passengers. Many vehicle owners are still waiting on replacement parts, currently driving with defective airbags that could be deadly if the vehicles are involved in an accident.
