Public money belongs in public schools – Daily High Five

But before you start planning your Memorial Day Weekend activities, check out the top story we're following today:

1. PUBLIC MONEY BELONGS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS : Lawmakers are back at the Statehouse today and there's word they could wrap up the 2022 legislative session by the end of the week. One of the items holding up the end of session is Governor Reynolds' proposal for private school vouchers. This morning, House Speaker Pat Grassley announced that they likely won't be able to pass the proposal this year. But we know anything can happen until lawmakers head home for the summer.

Keep contacting your legislators and telling them to vote "no" on school vouchers You can use the Iowa State Education Association toolkit for more information on how to reach out to your representatives.

Here's a look at the other stories we're keeping an eye on:

2. THE END IS IN SIGHT: There's a couple more items on the agenda for lawmakers before they can wrap up the 2022 legislative session. Lawmakers will have to pass a state budget before they adjourn. There could even be a vote on the state's bottle redemption program. We'll be keeping a close eye on the Capitol over the next few days to see which bills are passed and which are put on the back burner.
3. PRIMARY ELECTION DEADLINE: Iowa's primary election will take place on June 7th, but there are some important deadlines happening today. Today is the last day Iowans can pre-register for voting, and it's the last day to request an absentee ballot to get mailed to homes. You can still vote absentee in-person until June 6. You can find more information on how to cast your vote at VoterReady.Iowa.org.
4. UNRESOLVED HARASSMENT CLAIMS: Iowa State Senator Janet Petersen is helping draw attention to nearly 200 state of Iowa employee sexual harassment claims that have not been investigated. Senator Petersen has been working to get answers for weeks with no response from state leaders. Governor Reynolds has been named the least transparent Governor in recent Iowa history and these unresolved claims seem to be another issue she's hoping to sweep under the rug. It's time Governor Reynolds and her administration take these claims seriously.
5. HELP HAS ARRIVED: 78,000 pounds of infant formula arrived in the U.S. over the weekend, part of an effort to relieve a shortage across the country. Thanks to President Biden, even more shipments of formula are on the way. Last week, all three Republican members of Iowa's Congressional Delegation voted against a bill that would send $28 million to the FDA to boost formula supply. Iowans will remember their vote when the November election rolls around.
