Motorists urged to 'drive according to the conditions' this Bank Holiday Weekend

Torrential rain and cold snaps have had significant impact on the condition of Devon's roads

We are urging motorists to 'drive according to the conditions' over the Bank Holiday Weekend following a day of strong winds and rain (Thursday).

Gritting teams carried out multiple treatments on some of the county's main salting routes last night as road surface temperatures dropped close to or below freezing and snow fell in some areas.

A yellow Weather Warning is currently in place for Devon with gusts of 50 mph in many parts of the county continuing throughout the day.

The Met Office has said that some exposed coastal areas may experience gusts of up to 70 mph and large waves as the day wears on.

The strong winds are being accompanied by 'heavy, squally' showers and there is the possibility of hail and thunder in some locations.

Hail won't fall everywhere today but where it does it can quickly make road surfaces slippery, while surface water and spray are likely to worsen travel conditions rather more widely.

This may lead to journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected; there is also a small chance that large waves will cause beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

Last night Devon County Council deployed gritting teams for snow, primarily on the Barnstaple, Okehampton, Tiverton routes, and snow fall was still evident this morning in some places including Rundlestone in West Devon and Breakneck Bridge.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said:

"Wind and rain is widespread across the county and in some areas, there is an ongoing risk of icy patches from lower temperatures and hail. All of this can make roads more slippery than usual so I would urge everyone to take extra care when driving and allow plenty of time for your journey and drive to the conditions."
