Tallinn joins Miami-Dade on cleanup day

Thursday, April 18, 2024 - 13:34 by ce-press

Ryan Jenkins, managing director of Travelife Certified Estonian tour operator Den Eesti, was surprised and delighted when approached by Miami-based Estonian celebrity The Mermaid/Lady Merle Liivand, during Seatrade Cruise Global, and asked to join in the annual Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day.

Colleague Sirle Arro, head of marketing and communications for Port of Tallinn, says: "The event was ideal for Estonians, as the World Cleanup Day movement originated in Estonia and now has spread all over the world, though still coordinated from Tallinn by the global NGO Let's Do It World."

Carrying on the tradition, Jenkins was more than happy to join Guinness World Record swimmer and ocean acitivist Liivand and the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava. He comments: "In a few free hours before heading to the airport, I got to visit a beautiful part of Miami that I had never seen before and make it even more beautiful; meet the mayor of Miami-Dade County and discuss similarities with our own efforts in Tallinn; talk to a local scout troop who was there helping out; and scare a couple of iguanas while pulling trash out of the dunes."

The Baynanza community event in Florida has taken place every spring, since 1982, and to date two million pounds of trash have been removed from the shorelines.
