Izvorul Muntelui Dam – perfectly safe after earthquake

On March 28, 2024, in the region of Moldova, Neamt County, an earthquake with an intensity of 3.2 ml occurred, registered at 8:36 a.m. by the seismic monitoring installation in the Izvorul Muntelui Dam, an objective that belongs to Hidroelectrica.

Following the checks carried out by the personnel responsible for monitoring the behavior of the constructions jointly with the operating personnel, no damage was found to the installations, equipment or constructions related to the dam. The experts of Hidroelectrica carries out activities of tracking, measuring and interpreting data, no deviations and changes beyond normal limits being found.

We mention that Hidroelectrica's own earthquake measurement installation is part of the national network in the administration of the INFP, thus contributing to increasing the accuracy of earthquake recording.

The Izvorul Muntelui Dam, with a height of 127 meters, a length of 435 meters and a maximum width at the base of 119 meters, is the largest weight dam on Romania's inland rivers and the third highest dam in the country. It is also the ninth highest weight dam in Europe. In the year of its completion, 1961, it was the fourth highest weight dam in Europe.
