Journalism Skills Academy launches two new e-learning courses ahead of Autumn Statement

The NCTJ's Journalism Skills Academy (JSA) has launched two new e-learning courses in response to two of the biggest stories that continue to dominate the news agenda - business and economics and climate change.

In the week that Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will deliver his Autumn Statement to address the ongoing economic downturn, the JSA's business and economics course offers essential guidance on how to report on the complexities of the UK economy.

Also launching this week on the JSA's e-learning platform is a course on reporting climate change, in response to the continuous news coverage of climate issues which touches everyone's lives - from protesters on the M25 to extreme weather conditions.

Both courses provide a foundation in reporting on topical issues, placing importance on accurate sources of data and information. They also demystify subjects which can be quite complex to report.

Laura Adams, head of the Journalism Skills Academy, said: "We are delighted to be launching two new courses which are so relevant at the moment. Both subjects can be challenging to report on and we hope these short courses will leave learners feeling more knowledgeable and confident to tackle them."

The climate change course has been produced in partnership with the Grantham Institute - Climate Change and Environment at Imperial College London and the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at LSE, and coincides with the ongoing COP27 event in Egypt where world leaders, campaigners and activists have been debating the long-term effects of climate change.

Katrine Petersen, campaign manager - Climate Change Narratives, Grantham Institute at Imperial College London, said: "Climate change is a defining issue of our time - it touches on all parts of our societies and economies. Whether it's sport, business, politics or fashion, every story now has a climate angle, and journalists play an essential role in exploring those angles and making climate change and its harms and solutions clear and tangible to their readers, viewers and listeners.

"This course will help journalists from all backgrounds to report with accuracy and clarity on the countless ways that climate change - and our efforts to tackle it - is reshaping the world, from the risks we face to the benefits of action."
