UNICEF statement on reports of child casualties during fighting in Bor County, South Sudan

JUBA, South Sudan, 24 January 2022 - "UNICEF is shocked and deeply saddened by the news that three children reportedly died whilst fleeing fighting that took place in Baidit Payam, North East of Bor on 23rd January. Alarmingly, three women were also reportedly killed as a result of gunshot wounds.

"UNICEF deplores such acts and urges that children and civilians are protected from all forms of violence.

"Reports indicate that the inter-communal violence has resulted in 32 casualties and a further 26 wounded, including women and children, with many more unaccounted for.

"Reports of looting and burning of civilian properties and disruption of humanitarian services are alarming, and an obstruction of women and children's ability to live without violence and to safely access services.

"Children are paying the heaviest price of the continued Sub-National violence in South Sudan.

"UNICEF offers its deepest condolences to the families of the victims. We urge all groups and individuals to respect that all children and their families are kept out of harm's way and able to survive and thrive."
