The Latibex Forum highlights the contribution of market infrastructures to the harmonisation of capital flows

Overview of the 23rd Latibex Forum

  • BME, FIAB and the Colombian stock exchange agree in their defense of financial markets as the best way to boost the economy.
  • During the three-day event over a hundred investors worldwide held more than 500 one-on-one meetings with 60 leading companies.
  • The benchmark event for companies and investors from Latin America and Europe also reflects on digitisation and the challenges facing supply chains.

Following three days of intense activity, round tables and more than 500 virtual one-on-one meetings between investors and companies, the Latibex Forum concluded today. It did so with a panel highlighting the role of financial market infrastructures in the harmonisation of capital flows.

The panel, moderated by Claudio Zuchovicki, Secretary General of FIAB (the Ibero-American Federation of Stock Exchanges and Securities Markets), also featured Beatriz Alonso, Head of Markets at BME; Óscar Leiva, Head of Cámara de Riesgo Central de Contraparte de Colombia, and Elena Mesonero, Head of Regional Coverage for Spain and LatAm at Caceis Investor Services.

Beatriz Alonso stressed that the main role of financial markets is to bring investors and companies together in a secure environment, with confidence, transparency, visibility and liquidity. She also highlighted the importance of supporting all types of companies, regardless of their size or sector, and mentioned BME's projects in Latin America as well as its collaboration with Latin American stock exchanges. "The Latibex market allows the main Latin American companies to be traded in Europe, in euros and with the key role of the market maker, who contributes to the liquidity of securities, thus allowing this market to act as a gateway between companies and investors on both sides of the Atlantic", she added.

Óscar López stressed the importance of collaboration with BME (especially BME Clearing) in its development process in Colombia and stressed how security, availability, access and operational efficiency are vital elements for the harmonisation of financial markets. Elena Mesonero stated that for custodians having good market infrastructures is of the essence and stressed how they act as a point of access for investment flows.

Besides this panel there were two others, which dealt with the rise of entrepreneurship in Latin America and the digitisation boom, on the one hand, and strategies to face the post-Covid-19 challenges in supply chains, on the other. The first, moderated by Alberto Sanz, Head of Financing and Investor Relations at ICEX-Invest in Spain, was attended by executives from Axon Partners, Imagemaker and Netex. They stressed that the pandemic has been a major accelerator of digitalisation processes in all economic areas and has helped to cushion the impact of the health crisis, as it has allowed many companies to continue their activities and to operate remotely in countries all over the world.

The panel concerned with the challenges of supply chains, one of the hottest issues for the global economy, brought together representatives from Atrys Health, Elektra and Traixon. During the debate, the speakers highlighted how the pandemic has forced companies to anticipate customers' needs and adapt themselves to them in the context of the Covid-19 as well as innovating and diversifying their supply chains to cushion the impact of the pandemic on their businesses.

During the three-day Forum more than 60 companies and a hundred investors from all over the world met virtually and held more than 500 one-on-one meetings. 63% of the investors came from outside Spain.
