Hundreds skate in first two days of city centre roller disco

Published Wednesday, 27 October 2021

Just two days after the roller disco opening, hundreds of residents put their skates on and stepped into the rink.

The Roller Disco is hosted with SK8 House in Broadgate and is open every day this week.

The Roller Disco is a pop-up location for the Go Parks: Active Schools Challenge - City of Culture Special so customers can skate and scan.

There is one set price for all customers at £4, or £3 for those with a Go CV card. Sessions last for one hour.

Skate, helmet and wrist guard hire are included in the price with skate sizes starting at a UK child's size nine, up to an adult's size 13. Customers are also welcome to bring their own.

The roller rink is open 10am - 6pm, Monday - Saturday with last entry at 5.30pm and 10am - 4.30pm on Sunday with last entry at 4pm.

Tuesday morning saw a successful Quiet Session with no music or lights - Aisha from Hillfields, Coventry brought her family along and said: "In our religion we don't really listen to music, so we struggle to find things to do for the children.

"Also, for families with autistic children - this is a great opportunity and for everyone to be included in the city's activities."

There will be an additional session on Thursday evening, 7-9pm for students and adults only, also with a Go CV entry price of £3.

Councillor Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member Public Health and Sport, said: "I am so pleased to see how successful the Roller Disco has been so far. Seeing hundreds get active over the two days is absolutely brilliant. I love that it's a part of the Go Parks: Active schools Challenge too and another great addition to our year as UK City of Culture 2021.

"It's been great to hear about so many people using their Go CV cards too and receiving their discount. The discounted price applied to the Quiet Session we hosted earlier this week and will also apply to the student's session tomorrow.

"This is an event that really is perfect for everyone - it's affordable and accommodates all ages and abilities while providing some fun for our residents. I look forward to seeing more happy faces on the roller rink as we head into the weekend."

The roller rink is under cover to protect from all weather.

Groups and parties are welcome to attend. No booking is required in advance.
