Comprehensible Climate Reporting In Primetime

RTL has teamed up with the nonprofit 'Klima vor acht' (Climate before eight) to develop a regular TV format designed to inform about matters of climate change. On April 22, Earth Day, 'RTL Aktuell' anchor Maik Meuser will present the first 'Climate Update.' The format is being created in a joint effort by the editorial teams of the G+J magazines 'Stern' and 'Geo,' as well as NTV and RTL.

In Germany as elsewhere, the effects of global warming are being felt more and more clearly. In response, RTL and the nonprofit initiative 'Klima vor acht' are coordinating closely to develop a regular TV format that focuses on climate reporting that is both well-founded and easy to understand. The new format is to be shown alongside the news program 'RTL Aktuell.' On April 22, Earth Day, 'RTL Aktuell' anchor Maik Meuser will present the first 'Climate Update.' The format is being created in a joint effort by the editorial teams of the G+J magazines 'Stern' and 'Geo,' as well as NTV and RTL. It will be shown at 3:40 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on NTV and also on rtl.de, ntv.de, geo.de, brigitte.de, and stern.de.

'We need to do more'

'By addressing climate change, we are devoting ourselves to one of the most important challenges of our time,' says Stephan Schmitter, Managing Director RTL News. 'Since 2019, we have given the topic of climate and the environment a comprehensive and regular hearing during our Sustainability Weeks. But unfortunately, the clock is ticking faster and faster, and that's why we need to do even more. Inform and educate, be more stringent about raising awareness of the threats, and highlight options for what we can all do together for our future.'

Michael Flammer, Chairman of Klima vor acht e. V., said: 'We look forward to a constructive exchange with RTL. Our association Klima vor acht e.V. has set out to improve climate reporting on German television and reach as many people as possible with it. That is why it is a great success for us and our supporters that RTL has become the first TV broadcaster to follow our call.' 'RTL Aktuell' reaches an average 4.04 million viewers daily, 20.0 percent of the 14- to 59-year-old market, and 19.7 percent among 14- to 49-year-olds. Klima vor acht is an initiative of volunteers founded in August 2020 to promote regular, comprehensible, and scientifically based climate reporting on German television. Klima vor acht is independent, non-partisan and committed to constructive journalism.
