20 recruits to graduate from the Reno Fire Department academy

On Friday, July 1, 2022, the Reno Fire Department (RFD) will be recognizing the successful completion of its 19-week fire academy by 20 recruit firefighters. Additionally, the Sparks Fire Department will recognize two of its new recruits who also completed the academy. The ceremony starts at 9 a.m. at McKinley Arts and Culture Center.

Prior to being hired, the RFD recruits had to go through a written test, physical agility test and extensive interview process before they were offered a position in the recruit academy.

During the 19-week academy, the recruits were trained on all aspects of operating as a firefighter with RFD including structural firefighting, vehicle extrication, wildland fire operations, water rescue, technical rescue, hazardous materials calls, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and other skills.

Following graduation, the recruits will continue their training as probationary firefighters for RFD working alongside other Reno Firefighters in the stations responding to actual emergencies, during which time they will continue to learn and develop their skills.
