Fostering a diverse and inclusive cyber community

A Chevening scholar based at Cardiff University has been recognised for his outstanding efforts in promoting diversity and inclusivity within the UK cybersecurity sector.

Jonathan Ayodele, from Lagos in Nigeria, was highly commended in the Cyber Diversity Student Champion category of the UK Cyber Diversity Awards 2024.

The award recognises a student who has made significant contributions to fostering a diverse and inclusive cyber community through advocacy, activism, or initiatives.

A recipient of the UK government funded Chevening Scholarship, Jonathan studied the MSc in Cyber Security at Cardiff University's School of Computer Science and Informatics.

As a UK STEM ambassador and a key member of the CyberFirstWales initiative, he has helped create opportunities for underrepresented groups, particularly black individuals, in the cybersecurity field.

He said: "It's a tremendous honour to be recognised for my work in promoting diversity and inclusivity in the UK cybersecurity sector. This nomination is a testament to the collective efforts of young Nigerians striving to make a positive impact on the global stage."

Jonathan's initiatives include involvement in Cardiff University's Black History Month 2023 working group and his project highlighting black female tech pioneers in cybersecurity.

He says his contributions go some way to help emphasise the importance of diversity in fostering innovation and addressing the cybersecurity skills gap.

He added: "I'm grateful for my lecturers and the staff at the School of Computer Science and Informatics for their support throughout my studies in creating an inclusive environment and fostering collaboration. Cardiff University has contributed not just to my academic growth but also my personal development and networks."

The UK Cyber Diversity Awards aim to raise awareness about the under representation of ethnic minorities in the cyber security sector.

This prestigious event, which took place in Wolverhampton, brought together industry leaders, professionals, advocates, and allies and honour those who are actively championing diversity and have made significant contributions to the cyber security field.
