New Commitment from Internet Service Providers to Offer Highspeed Broadband Plans at an Affordable Rate Is a Step in the Right Direction, Says ITIF

WASHINGTON-Following President Biden's announcement today that 20 Internet service providers have committed to offering broadband plans with at least 100 megabits per second download speeds for no more than $30 per month, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the leading think tank for science and technology policy, released the following statement from Joe Kane, director of broadband and spectrum policy at ITIF:

Today's commitments by broadband providers underscore the immense progress we have made toward fast and affordable broadband throughout the country. It is notable that the companies able to make this pledge are largely private actors.

As the federal government prepares to roll out even more investments in broadband infrastructure, it should double down on the success of these private providers to close the digital divide as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The providers in question also include at least one wireless Internet service provider, which highlights the ability of a variety of technologies to serve the diverse needs of Americans in distinct geographic areas. This should only emphasize the need for technology neutrality in allocating federal funds.
