AFL-CIO Daily Briefs: Shuler; SIU; AFT; New Jersey and Pittsburgh

Message from President Liz Shuler

  • Look what happened in the 2020 election: Our movement organized together and stood strong, and we delivered a pro-worker administration and a pro-worker majority in Congress.
  • And we're seeing the results. The Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, the bipartisan infrastructure law and the American Rescue Plan-these are huge wins for working people.
  • But-and this really worries me-too few know about these critical victories. With only 43 days left until Election Day, we have to get out there and make sure our members and our communities know about the progress we're making.

SIU Begins Relief Efforts in the Caribbean and Alaska

The Seafarers (SIU) are teaming up with national and local labor organizations, SIU-contracted vessel operators, and other supporters to collect and deliver relief supplies to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands after Hurricane Fiona ravaged the islands, and in Alaska, where remote communities are recovering from massive flooding caused by a typhoon. Relief supply collection points include the union's hiring halls in Houston; Philadelphia; Jacksonville, Florida; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Tacoma, Washington; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

AFT Members Hold 48-Hour Strike in Eastern Connecticut

Nurses held a massive rally at Windham Hospital in Willimantic, Connecticut, on Friday. The 100 members of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) went on a two-day strike Thursday to demand a fair contract from the hospital that puts patients first and retains nurses who are leaving the profession at alarming rates.

AFT President Randi Weingarten (not pictured) spoke at the rally. "It was only when they set up a two-day strike that the hospital started moving," she said of the negotiations with management. "This is complete disrespect for the people who sustained the community during COVID."

New Jersey State AFL-CIO Launches Massive Labor Walks as Unions Aim to Win in November

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO launched a massive door-to-door voter education effort on Saturday as it worked to mobilize the members of its affiliated unions to support pro-labor candidates for Congress, as well as county, municipal and school board offices throughout the state. New Jersey is host to several competitive congressional districts where the votes of union members could be a decisive factor in determining who controls the House of Representatives next year. And in Trenton, the state federation has endorsed four union sisters as candidates for City Council, creating a unique opportunity to win a "labor majority" governing body.

Pittsburgh Labor Leader Slams Anti-Union Politicians' Election Promises

Allegheny-Fayette Central Labor Council President Darrin Kelly (IAFF, not pictured) released a blistering statement on Friday after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and a group of Congress members unveiled their "Commitment to America" election agenda in western Pennsylvania. "They had dozens of chances to show that they stand with American workers, and they chose to stand against us-every single time," Kelly declared. "That's why our members across the entire labor movement are out in the streets and on the phones every day working to elect all of our endorsed candidates."
