Multilingualism – a challenge for the EU Agencies Network

The main aim of the half-day workshop is to explore the opportunities of multilingualism for the EU Agencies, in particular in their external outreach activities. Enabling EU stakeholders and citizens to have access to information in their own language is an integral part of the EU project and one of the cornerstones of our democracies.

Implementing multilingualism is a challenge for the EU agencies, as they have to define their language strategies in an effective and cost-efficient manner.

The advent of new language technologies, in which the Centre has invested significantly over the past two years, opens up new opportunities for going multilingual. The Centre's new services, including neural machine translation, transcription and copy 'n' paste translation, have reshuffled the cards. They provide savings to the EU agencies in terms of time and money, and make specific processes significantly easier.

During the workshop, the representatives of the EU Agencies will have the opportunity to compare different EU Agency strategies for handling multilingual websites. This exercise onsharing best practices will support them in defining their needs and finding the best-suited solutions.

The Translation Centre looks forward to welcoming Ms. Emily O'Reilly, the European Ombudsman, as the keynote speaker to this workshop. Well known for her commitment to multilingualismin the EU, she will set out the framework for the discussions and brainstorming on how to move forward on the important topic of multilingualism.
