Street Rehab, Streetscape Project to Begin Next Week on East 36th Street North

9/17/2021

A street rehabilitation and streetscape project on East 36th Street North between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Peoria Avenue is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 21. During construction, one lane of traffic will be open in each direction in the work area.

The project includes concrete paving, waterline replacement, stormwater drainage improvements, and traffic signal improvements at MLK Jr. Boulevard, Hartford Avenue and Peoria Avenue. The street will be reconfigured to one lane in each direction, with occasional center turn lanes, on-street parallel parking between the Osage Prairie Trail and Peoria Avenue, and bike lanes that connect with the Osage Prairie Trail. Other features will include landscaped medians, more than 300 new trees, new sidewalks, crosswalk markings, and rapid flash beacons for improved crosswalk safety at the Osage Prairie Trail and at the bus stops west of Garrison Avenue.

When completed, the street will encourage new pedestrian-oriented businesses, walking and biking, and will discourage speeding. This project is supported by the 36th Street North Small Area Plan, which called for a walkable street with better sidewalks, transit access, landscaping, and bike lanes.

The City of Tulsa has contracted with Ground Level LLC, for this $4,906,341 Improve Our Tulsa project. Completion of the project is scheduled for late 2022 or early 2023.
