BGE Recycling Drop-off Event Gives Customers a Chance to Receive Cash Rewards

BALTIMORE (Sept. 17, 2021) - BGE will host a recycling drop-off event in Columbia, MD this weekend. During the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® event, customers can drop off up to four old room A/C units or dehumidifiers for recycling. They are eligible to receive up to $100 in rewards for their old appliances.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Columbia Association Aquatics Office, located at 9450 Gerwig Lane, Columbia, MD 21046.

'Partnering with our customers to provide them with a quick, easy and environmentally friendly way to dispose of their old units has benefits beyond the financial incentive,' said Eric Riopko, manager of residential energy efficiency programs for BGE. 'By removing these older units from the energy grid and properly recycling them, our customers are not only helping to reduce energy usage in their own homes, they are also helping to reduce the emission of ozone-depleting substances and greenhouses gases, ultimately helping the state of Maryland reduce its carbon footprint.'

Since 2013, BGE customers have recycled more than 3,688 units through these events resulting in a total of 904,207 kWh savings. That is the equivalent of 218 tons of recycled waste being kept out of landfills.

Rain or shine, representatives will be on hand to unload units directly from vehicles. Units must be in working condition to be eligible. Customers will receive a check for $25 in the mail, approximately four to six weeks after the event. Plus, one lucky winner will receive a Phillips Hue LED Starter Kit (a $200 value!). There is no purchase necessary, and all event participants will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win. More information is available at BGESmartEnergy.com/RecycleMyAC or by calling 866.898.1901.

As part of BGE's commitment to safety, we are continuing to monitor developments related to the COVID-19 pandemic and taking appropriate precautions to protect the health and safety of our customers, contractors and employees. At this time, all BGE employees and contractors are following health and safety best practices consistent with CDC guidelines, which includes wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.

The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® also offers a $50 reward for recycling old working refrigerators and freezers. To participate, customers can contact BGE to schedule a no-contact pickup, and BGE will haul away their old refrigerators and freezers at no additional cost. Each household is limited to recycling three refrigerators or freezers through this program. Appliances must be in working (cooling) condition and measure 10 to 30 cubic feet, which is the standard size for most refrigerators and freezers. Room air conditioning units and dehumidifiers also may be recycled through this program, but only if picked up at the same time as an eligible refrigerator or freezer. Appointments are required and can be scheduled at BGESmartEnergy.com or by calling 866.898.1901.

The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® is a suite of programs that enable customers to control energy use, leading to more efficient use of electricity and lowering energy bills from where they otherwise would be. Collectively, the programs help contain the cost of energy and improve reliability. The programs also help to reduce peak demand and slow the growth in energy consumption to lessen the need for more power plants. BGE offers energy-saving solutions for renters, homeowners, large and small business customers, nonprofits and institutional customers. More information is available at BGESmartEnergy.com. These programs support the EmPOWER Maryland Energy Efficiency Act.
