Mexico organizes a virtual workshop on preventing the violent extremism that could lead to terrorism

The virtual workshop was organized jointly by the Foreign Ministry, the Mexican Mission to the OAS and the OAS Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (Cicte).

The Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the SRE, Martha Delgado, Cicte Executive Secretary Alison Treppel, and Committee Chair and head of the Guyana Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, James Singh, participated in the inauguration.

In her remarks, Undersecretary Delgado stressed that violent extremism is not an isolated or changeless issue, and its evolution is a challenge for the countries of our hemisphere. She also highlighted the need to address the ease with which small and light weapons can end up in the wrong hands, with devastating effect.

Experts from Canada, the United States, Mexico and international organizations, such as the UN Special Rapporteur on the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, shared experiences and good practices to prevent violent extremism and address its causes.

More than 90 officials involved with security and diplomatic and consular functions from 19 OAS member states participated.

This initiative is part of Mexico's broader strategy, headed by Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, to comprehensively prevent violent extremism, based on the specific needs of the countries of the region and in full adherence to international law and international human right law.

Mexico holds the vice presidency of Cicte and will take office during the committee's 22nd session, which will take place in the summer of 2022.
