DelBene Highlights Inflation Reduction Act’s Historic Energy Savings for Washington Families and Small Businesses

Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) hosted a virtual press conference to highlight the historic energy savings for Washington families, small businesses, and municipalities included in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that President Biden signed into law in August 2022.

The Inflation Reduction Act delivers an unprecedented federal investment in clean energy and climate action. It is also estimated to reduce America's carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030 through bold investments in electrification and energy-efficient products.

For Washington state, the new law offers several types of savings on energy-efficient products and appliances. This includes up to:

  • 50-100% discount on home energy efficiency and electric appliances
  • 30% discount on home solar and battery installation
  • $7,500 for electric vehicles
  • $8,000 for heat pumps
  • $5 per square foot for energy efficiency in commercial buildings

"The Inflation Reduction Act is a huge victory for Washington state," said DelBene. "We are leading the charge in tackling the climate crisis and expanding access to sustainable, clean energy resources. This new law lowers energy costs for families and small businesses while creating good-paying jobs across the state as our clean energy economy and manufacturing sectors grow."

"The Inflation Reduction Act matches our values and will enable us to act on our climate goals faster. Values are critically important, but the actions they lead to are the only thing that matters in the fight against climate change," said Bothell Mayor Mason Thompson. "Thank you to Congresswoman DelBene and the rest of our federal delegation for passing this legislation. It gives us an opportunity to turn our values into actions faster, and we're excited for the actions it's going to lead to in Bothell."

"A key part of this work to making sure we are successful is having reliable funding that prioritizes investments in overburdened communities and that can build on the work our state is already doing across the economy for climate action," said Rebecca Ponzio, Washington Environmental Council. "Thanks to the passage of the IRA, our state is now better positioned than ever before to leverage our state dollars to accelerate addressing our climate crisis."

"The Inflation Reduction Act focuses on customer-centric solutions that will help low- and moderate-income customers make the transition to clean energy," said Andy Wappler, Puget Sound Energy. "It puts us on surer footing toward making clean energy more accessible to more people, in part by incenting energy-efficient appliances and technologies like heat pumps, rooftop solar panels and electric vehicles for customers who have traditionally struggled to afford them."

"We appreciate the potential that the Inflation Reduction Act has for encouraging investment in the production of clean energy and, perhaps most importantly, providing financial tools that will help our customers be able to access important energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades for their homes," said Kellie Stickney, Snohomish PUD. "As we move toward a cleaner energy future, funding for low- and moderate-income households, such as that included in the Act, will be vital to ensuring that no families are left behind."
