SFU Nursing BSN student receives international recognition award

Kelsey Crittendon, senior Saint Francis University nursing BSN student, received a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students on April 22, 2024. The award was a surprise. She was nominated by her preceptor, Kaitlyn Moore. UPMC Altoona representative, Jennifer Bopp, Registered Nurse Educator presented her with the international recognition "thank you " award in class.

According to Kelsey's preceptor: "Kelsey was a quick learner and picked up on the flow so fast. She never had a slow day. We were handed some interesting and difficult assignments and she handled them very well. She didn't just get comfortable with ICU patients but she also was with me in the ER and when I was floated to StepDown. She learned a lot about critical trauma and post-surgical patients. She also got to learn the responsibilities of acting as the Charge RN when I would be in charge. She would help respond with me to rapid responses.

Kelsey learned very early into her hours time management and was able to care for two ICU patients with no delay. What I really admired about her was her teamwork. After we would finish up our care on our patients, she was up and asking all my coworkers if they needed anything. She was there for all of us! I believe Kelsey will be a great nurse wherever she goes! I know she told me she was interested in Pediatric Intensive Care, which I think is absolutely perfect for her."

Students with a true calling to nursing never lose sight of the fact that they are treating a human being who needs all the sensitivity and compassion they can bring to them while they are at the height of emotion and most vulnerable.

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students was created to recognize and celebrate nursing students for the above-and-beyond care and compassion shown to patients and their families.

Patrick Barnes who died at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP). The nursing care Patrick received when hospitalized profoundly touched his family and The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was created.
