Defence Minister Phan Van Giang holds talks with his Russian counterpart

(Bqp.vn) - Defence Minister General Phan Van Giang held talks with his Russian Counterpart General Sergey Shoygu in Moscow on December 1, within the framework of the official visit to the Russian by President Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

The talks took place when the traditional friendship and the Vietnam - Rusia comprehensive strategic partnership have been developed well and the two countries celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the strategic partnership. Despite impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two sides affirmed that defence cooperation has been actively implemented and achieved practical results over the past time.

The two sides agreed to continue strengthening defence cooperation in the coming time in areas, such as exchange of delegations at all levels; maintaining the defence strategic dialogue mechanism at deputy minister level; training high-quality personnel; supporting each other and participating in international multilateral activities organized by the two defence ministries; exchange of experiences in military-technical cooperation; organizing joint activities in the field of search and rescue, humanitarian assistance and overcoming war consequences. Besides, they would continue to consult and cooperate closely at multilateral forums, especially the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus).

Speaking at the talks, General Phan Van Giang highly appreciated Russia's position and role that contributed to the peace and stability in the world; stressing that Vietnam welcomes Russia's peaceful contributions to the Asia - Pacific region in general and Southeast Asia in particular. He also affirmed that Vietnam supports Russia's initiatives and proposals in order to promote mutually beneficial cooperative relations with ASEAN as well as to contribute to maintaining the peace, stability, and development in each region as well as in the world.

Also on this occasion, Defence Minister Phan Van Giang invited his Russian counterpart to pay an official visit to Vietnam as soon as possible.

For his part, General Sergey Shoygu thanked the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence for successfully organizing the Contest within the framework of the International Army Games 2021 in Vietnam and sending high-level delegations to participate in international multilateral activities organized by the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Following the talks, the two defence ministers signed a number of important cooperation documents, creating a legal basis to further promote defence and military-technical cooperation between the two countries. The Russian Ministry of Defence solemnly held a ceremony to present Russia's Friendship Order to General Phan Van Giang.

On the same day, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc presented Vietnam's Friendship Order to General Sergey Shoygu for his important contributions to strengthening the bilateral defence cooperation and the Vietnam - Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.
