European Union and Organisation of American States hold 7th High Level Political Dialogue

The European Union (EU) and the Organisation of American States (OAS) organised the 7th High Level Political Dialogue on 27 October 2021.

During the meeting, participants discussed the following issues:
the impact of COVID-19 in the LAC region and the path to sustainable recovery; democracy; developments in the Americas (including Venezuela, Nicaragua, Haiti, Cuba); respect for human rights in the hemisphere; transnational challenges (multi-dimensional security, climate, gender and women empowerment, inequalities, migration); electoral observation in 2021-2022 and EU-OAS cooperation.

The meeting took place in a cooperative spirit and demonstrated the importance that the EU attaches to reinforcing its ties with the Americas and Caribbean Region and with its regional organisations. The EEAS will continue to pursue the dialogue with the OAS, a key hemispheric partner in the Americas, in order to support democracy, the respect of Human Rights and effective multilateralism, foster solutions to regional challenges and develop foresight.

The EEAS Deputy Managing Director for the Americas, Javier Niño, and the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, conducted the annual Dialogue in Brussels. Other participants included the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the OAS SG Chief of Staff, the OAS Strategic Advisor, and the OAS Secretaries and Directors for thematic areas as well as officials from the EEAS Directorates for the Americas.
