Ward's 50 Recognizes Tokio Marine HCC as Top Performer for 2021

For the sixth consecutive year, Tokio Marine HCC (HCC Insurance Holdings Group) has been recognized among the Ward's 50® group of top performing companies in both the property-casualty and life-health categories. This coveted placement positions our company in the top 50 of nearly 3,000 property-casualty insurance companies and more than 700 life-health insurance companies for outstanding financial results in the areas of safety, consistency and performance over a five-year period (2016-2020).

Ward's 50 is released by Ward Benchmarking, the leading provider of benchmarking and best practices studies for the insurance industry, through their analysis of staff levels, compensation, business practices, and expenses for all areas of company operations, thereby helping insurers measure results compared to peer groups, optimize performance, and improve profitability.

The Ward's 50 methodology is grounded in the evaluation of key safety and consistency measurements and performance tests. Low investment returns, rising loss costs, and competitive market conditions continue to impact financial returns for the industry. In selecting the Ward's 50, the identified companies must pass financial stability requirements and measure their ability to grow, while maintaining strong capital positions and underwriting results.

To be awarded the Ward's 50 designation, insurance companies must pass minimum thresholds of performance in the following areas:

Safety and Consistency Tests

Each company must pass primary safety and consistency tests, including:

  • Surplus and premiums of at least $50 million for each of the five years analyzed (2016-2020, in this case)
  • Net income in at least four of the last five years
  • Compound annual growth in premiums between -10 percent and 40 percent

Performance Measurements

The financial stability of all companies is reviewed to ensure that they have the potential to grow while maintaining strong financial figures. Companies that pass the safety and consistency tests are measured and scored on the following elements:

  • Five-year average return on average equity
  • Five-year average return on average assets
  • Five-year average return on total revenue
  • Five-year growth in revenue
  • Five-year growth in surplus
  • Five-year average combined ratio (applicable only to property-casualty insurance companies)

The Ward's 50 list of top performing companies is released by Ward Benchmarking, a leading global professional services firm providing a broad range of risk, retirement, human capital and health solutions.
