Basketball: Aggie Men Win Opener

The UC Davis men's and women's basketball teams are each Big West Conference champions - the first time since 2003 that one university claimed both titles outright the same year. Go Ags!

This week the teams compete in the conference tournaments in Southern California, and we've got all the information you'll need if you'll be watching from here.

The women's team (14-2) clinched the conference title Feb. 24, while the men's title hopes came down to the last game of the season, last Saturday night (March 2), against UC Irvine - with UC Davis and UC Irvine tied for first place with 11-4 records, meaning the winner would be the conference champ.

And the game went to double overtime! The Aggies prevailed, 90-84, securing a guaranteed spot in the National Invitation Tournament. But, if they win the conference tournament, they'll go to the NCAA Tournament - the Big Dance - after having made the tournament for the first time in school history a year ago. The men's team has an overall record this year of 21-9.

The Aggie women (24-5 overall) have secured a spot in the WNIT, but they too will go to the NCAA Tournament if they win the conference tournament. The Aggie women have been in the NCAA Tournament once before, in 2011.

The men and the women each enter their conference tournaments as the top seeds, by virtue of being regular season champs. Here is the schedule:

Aggie men

The men's team played today (March 8) in the first game of the tournament, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, defeating the No. 8 seed, UC Riverside, 70-66.

Watch it live, online, on ESPN3; in order to log in, you must verify that you are signed up with a television provider such as Xfinity or Dish. And, if you're planning ahead, yes: UC Davis and UC Irvine could be headed for a repeat match-up in the championship game at 9 p.m. Saturday (March 10), to be carried on ESPN2 or WatchESPN.
