Jonathan, Ratcliff claim No. 1 doubles flight at DePauw as women's tennis opens fall slate

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Senior and junior won the No. 1 doubles flight as the Bellarmine University women's tennis team opened its fall season last weekend at the DePauw Fall Invitational.

Jonathan and Ratcliff saved three match points in defeating Valparaiso's Claire Czerwonka and Isabell Schoolcraft 8-7 (8-6) in the championship final of the No. 1 doubles flight. The duo also downed Hanover's Meghan Farrell and Lizzy Katzenberger 8-0.

Also in the No. 1 doubles flight, junior and sophomore were victorious in the consolation final, notching an 8-1 win over Hanover's Cami Jones and Haley Parker.

In the No. 2 doubles flight, freshmen and notched an 8-0 win over Hanover's Maddie Shannon and Claire Goff in the consolation final, while freshmen and also tallied a win in the flight.

Ratcliff earned two wins in the No. 1 singles flight, rallying for a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) victory over DePauw's Amanda Showalter in the third-place match. Jonathan was victorious in two matches at No. 1 as well.

Smith captured a pair of victories in the No. 2 singles flight, and Devillez added a win in the same section. Kozerski advanced to the No. 3 singles flight finals after winning quarterfinal and semifinal matches, while Varnum also collected two wins at No. 3 including one in the third-place contest.

Beck earned a spot in the No. 4 singles flight finals after quarterfinal and semifinal triumphs, and Whitlock's second victory at No. 4 secured her third place.

Bellarmine's freshmen all registered their first collegiate wins.
