Team (Shipmates all!),
Today we reached a significant milestone for the Royal Canadian Navy and the National Shipbuilding Strategy. Today, for the first time in almost 25 years, the RCN, your Navy, has welcomed a new ship into the fleet - HMCS Harry DeWolf, our first Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship. This is a big deal, not just for the RCN, but for all of Canada. This ship will give us new capabilities in our North while also being able to operate offshore and internationally. It is truly a ship for coast to coast to coast. So I wanted to be sure to reach out to share not just my but your Canadian Armed Forces' & Navy's appreciation for you! As a result of your work, the Government of Canada has a new ship that will be a pride for our sailors who crew and perform the tasks they are assigned. So here is a BZ & thank you to all of you for working so long and, I am happy to say, so successfully, in this important endeavour!
Over more than a decade, a tremendous amount of work from industry, other government departments, DND and CAF teams has ensured that this project advanced to the success we see today. These years of hard work and collaboration are now paying off with the first ship (and more coming!). Once fully operational, and I know this will take some time, these ships will increase Canada's Arctic presence as well as provide a vessel that can deploy throughout the world. This ship, with its fuel reserves and northern fueling station, will enable Canada to routinely sail through our Arctic Archipelago and help safeguard Canada's interests and sovereignty in the North. We will support science, other government departments and other CAF elements with this ship that is designed to operate in that often austere and harsh environment. As such, this ship's delivery clearly represents something you, like us your RCN shipmates, should celebrate given your role in this realization!
Bravo Zulu to you all, our Shipmates across Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces, our colleagues in other government departments and industry on this occasions as we welcome HMCS Harry DeWolf to the RCN.
Vice-Admiral Art McDonald
Commander Royal Canadian Navy
