Henley-on-Thames: HGVs must be able to deliver to keep shops stocked - RHA on ITV

The RHA told a broadcaster that businesses in Henley-on-Thames rely on lorries to deliver goods after claims that some truckers are using the town as a short cut.

Local authority officials are reported to be putting up cameras to monitor lorries.

Residents, according to ITV Meridian, say the number of HGVs travelling through Henley-on-Thames is making it dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists, with claims that some vehicles are even driving over pavements.

It's believed that people are using the town as a shortcut around the M4.

Rhys Williams, RHA Regional Operations Manager, said: "These vehicles could be delivering in the town.

"There's industry in the town, supermarkets, pubs and filling stations, which all require HGVs to deliver goods to them.

"Before we can say they are using it as a rat run, we need to have evidence."

Last month he told BBC Oxford that there's a lack of facilities for lorry drivers along the A34 and M40. Truckers are often left without anywhere adequate to park at the end of their working day, leaving them at increased risk of organised crime gang attacks.

We estimate there's a nationwide shortage of 11,000 parking spaces for HGV drivers.

We recently welcomed the announcement of upgrades to driver facilities across the country as part of our facilities campaign. The Roads Minister confirmed that the Government and industry is improving 38 truck stops thanks to £16.5m investment through the HGV parking and driver welfare grant scheme.

We continue to campaign for a reform of planning rules which will speed up the process so that more facilities can be built.
