With just over a week left before the deadline, primary and secondary school students can now submit their entries for the Central Bank of Barbados' 50th anniversary schools' essay competition. The essays, which must be submitted electronically, should be uploaded to the competition's portal.

"The submission portals are open for all those who have completed their essays, and our judging panel is ready to review them. We are really excited to hear the voice of our primary and secondary school students," said Darrin Downes, head of the Bank's 50th anniversary planning committee.

Downes also offered a preview of the prizes the winning students and their schools would receive. "The Bank is very conscious that over the last two years, access to devices for online learning has become increasingly important for students and schools in Barbados. So, we have included both cash prizes and tablets for a number of winners in each category. There is also a special institutional prize for the school of the top student, both for the primary and secondary essays."

The essay competition is open to primary school students in classes three and four, whose topic is "A Day as the Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados", and secondary school students in fifth and sixth forms, including the Barbados Community College and the Samuel Jackman Institute of Technology, who will write on "The Role of the Central Bank in Barbados' National Development."

"There are just under two weeks left in the competition, but there is still time for students to do their research and enter. To help, we've created a dedicated websitefor information about the essay competition, including word limits, submission guidelines and reference material such as the new video serieslaunched for primary school studentsand the CBB 101series, which will be very useful for secondary school students."

The Central Bank of Barbados' 50th anniversary celebrations are being held under the theme "Living the Legacy: Continuing the Journey." All queries about the competition and the celebrations should be sent to [email protected].
