Trip by H.M. the King to Honduras

His Majesty the King will travel to the Republic of Honduras on Wednesday, 28 January on the occasion of the ceremony for the transfer of the Presidential Authority from President Juan Orlando Hernández to the President-elect of Honduras, Xiomara Castro. This is the first visit by His Majesty the King to Honduras. In January 2014, as the then Prince of Asturias, he attended the transfer of the Presidential Authority and in 2012 he made a work visit.

During his stay in Honduras on 26 and 27 January, H.M. the King will hold meetings with President Juan Orlando Hernández and with the President-elect, Xiomara Castro. His Majesty will also take part in a meeting with Spanish residents in Honduras. On Thursday, 27 January, His Majesty will attend the ceremony for the transfer of the Presidential Authority at the national stadium in the capital of Honduras.

The presence of His Majesty - the Head of State - in Tegucigalpa, clearly shows the importance that Spain assigns to our bilateral relations with Honduras, particularly at this difficult moment in time due to the health pandemic, and underlines our firm intention to step up our ties of friendship and accompany Honduras during this new era, to the benefit of the citizens of both our countries.

The election of Xiomara Castro - the first woman to hold the Presidency of the Republic, and the only female Head of State in the whole of Ibero-America, symbolises the achievements in the fight for the equality of women and, in particular, for the women of Honduras.

His Majesty will be accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares Bueno.
