Community Members Encouraged to Develop a Property Maintenance Plan

As the weather warms and grass begins to grow, the Code Enforcement Division of the Community Development Department is encouraging residents to develop a maintenance plan for yard work and property maintenance issues. A comprehensive environmental property maintenance plan should address grass, weeds, litter and debris, yard waste, and inoperable vehicles.

Grass and weeds cannot exceed ten inches in height. This includes growth in fence lines, around foundations, and at the alley. In addition, litter must be removed from the entire property including the alley, curb lines, and fence lines. Tall grass, weeds, and litter decrease property values and can harbor mosquitos, rodents, and other pests.

Limbs, branches, and debris must be removed from the property. Maintenance plans should address branches that may fall during a storm to ensure that they are removed from the property in a timely manner. The city of Peoria offers yard waste pickup to all residents as part of our waste management contract with GFL. Yard waste is collected on the same day as trash. If you have questions on yard waste pickup, please contact GFL at (309) 688-0760.

Vehicles parked on the property must be licensed and operable in good repair. Inoperable or unlicensed vehicles will be tagged and towed by city staff. Vehicles may not be parked on an unpaved surface in the front yard, the back yard, the side yard, or along the alley. If you have questions on how to add additional parking to your property, please contact the Development Center at (309) 494-8600.

The Community Development Department works to reduce blight in neighborhoods, protect property values, increase public safety, and encourage neighborhood development. If you notice properties not being maintained in your neighborhood, please submit a complaint through Peoria Cares at (309) 494-2273 or online at www.peoriagov.org/peoria-cares.
