Estonian Ambassador to Iraq Lembit Uibo presented his credentials

Today 20 January, Estonia's first ambassador to Iraq Lembit Uibo presented his credentials to President Barham Salih. The ambassador resides in Paris, France.

At the presentation ceremony, the ambassador and the president highlighted cooperation in defence, humanitarian aid, digital affairs and the economy.

Estonia is contributing to several international missions in Iraq; Estonian soldiers are part of NATO's mission in Iraq and the US-led Inherent Resolve operation. Estonia has posted a civilian expert to the European Union Advisory Mission (EUAM), which offers Iraq strategic advice in reforming the civilian security sector.
"Estonia is happy to share its experience in e-governance and digitalisation, cooperate on education and offer its diplomatic and regional expertise," the ambassador said.

The Republic of Iraq recognised the Republic of Estonia on 1 January 1992. Diplomatic relations between the countries were established on 22 April 2005.

Lembit Uibo joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1999, participating in the accession talks as a diplomat in the Division of European Union Law and preparing the Treaty of Accession with the European Union. He has been a government representative in the Court of Justice of the European Union, ambassador to the European Union's Political and Security Committee and ambassador to the Czech Republic and Belgium. Between 2018 and 2021, Lembit Uibo was the Director General of the Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since November 2021, Lembit Uibo has been the Estonian Ambassador to France, and the non-resident ambassador to Tunisia and Monaco.

Lembit Uibo graduated from the Estonian School of Diplomacy and has a master's degree in European and comparative law from Maastricht University.
