RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, has endorsed Clarissa Cervantes (she/they) for Riverside City Council, Ward 2. Current Ward 2 Councilmember Andy Melendrez, who has endorsed Cervantes, announced earlier this year that he would not seek reelection in 2021. Clarissa identifies as bisexual and queer and, if elected, she would become the first openly LGBTQ+ person and first Latina elected to Ward 2. The election will take place on June 8, 2021 and a runoff, if necessary, will be held on November 2, 2021.

'Clarissa Cervantes represents the future of LGBTQ+ leaders in California,' said Equality California Executive Director Rick Chavez Zbur. 'As an openly bisexual, Latina woman, Clarissa will fight for LGBTQ+ and all Riverside residents at city hall. Equality California enthusiastically supports Clarissa's historic campaign for Riverside City Council.'

'To receive the endorsement of Equality California is a personal testament to my sovereignty as an LGBTQ+ person,' said Clarissa Cervantes. 'This endorsement is for not only me but for all people in the City or Riverside who desire to be seen, celebrated and embraced for who they are. Equally. With no reservations. I vow to be a City Councilmember who stands and fights for equality, every day.'

Clarissa is a mother and lifelong Riverside County resident who has devoted her career to empowering working families, fighting for social justice, and increasing participation in local, state, and national elections. As a Legislative Field Representative to Councilmember Andy Melendrez and organizer for SEIU 121RN, Clarissa has extensive community and legislative experience, fighting for Riverside residents. Clarissa has been endorsed by Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, Assemblymember James Ramos, Assemblymember Jose Medina, Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes, Riverside County Supervisor Manuel PeĢrez, Councilmember Andy Melendrez, Riverside County Democratic Pary, Riverside County National Organization for Women, Service Employee International Union Workers (SEIU) 121RN and more.
