Water Use Efficiency

In 2023, the City's drinking water sources produced 2.4 billion gallons. Of that, 93.6% was used for authorized purposes, leaving 6.4% of water produced lost in the distribution system (154,191,828 gallons). This is attributed to water main breaks, leaks and theft of water.

WA State Department of Health standards require us to maintain water loss below 10% of production on a rolling three-year average. We currently have an average of 8.5%, keeping us in compliance. To continue to meet the State requirement, we assess data accuracy, calibrate source meters and conduct leak detection surveys. Controlling water loss is an important part of maintaining a sustainable drinking water supply.

Olympia's Water System Plan
The City's 2021-2026 Water System Plan (WSP) guides the drinking water utility in key areas such as water conservation, source assessments, financial planning and operations and maintenance. The WSP was adopted by City Council in November 2023 and approved by the Department of Health on March 1, 2024. Washington Administrative Code 246-290-100 requires water utilities with 1,000 or more connections, or those that are expanding, to develop water system plans every 6 to 10 years.
