Galway Trolley Figures Quadruple – Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

12 October, 2017 - by Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

Trolley watch figures in Galway University Hospital have quadrupled in ten years and the problems within our health system in the West are getting much worse rather than improving, according to Sinn Fein Senator, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking in the Seanad today, the Galway West/South Mayo Senator said:

'Trolley watch figures published by the INMO show that when we compare 2017 to 2006 the trolley figures in GUH & Portiuncula Hospital have quadrupled. For the period January - August 2006 there were 1190 in GUH and 306 in Portiuncula.

'The comparable figures for 2017 show that there were four times more people on trollies, 4331 in GUH and 1300 in Portiuncula.

'We also have 101,261 on inpatient and outpatient waiting lists in the SAOLTA hospital group at present. 50,496 of these in GUH, 9,549 in Mayo General Hospital and 3,915 in Portiuncula. In the SAOLTA hospital group 10,652 have been on these lists for over 18 months.

'Successive governments have failed to address these crises in the health services. They are failing the people of the west of Ireland.

'This weeks budget does nothing to address the problems either. The Sinn Féin alternative budgte would have made a difference. We allocated an extra €503m to these services, far more than the €289m the government and Fianna Fáíl have provided for.

'Unlike this government Sinn Féin has a vision for our health services and we have published proposals to address the crisis in A and E.

'These include increasing bed numbers by 500 and reopening all closed beds.

'We would increase nursing numbers by an additional 500 nurses and midwives 'each and every year over a five year term, we would recruit 800 more consultants plus medical secretaries and address other staffing issues.

'On top of that we would increase home help hours by 30% over three years and increase respite care service provision for older people by 20%.

'We would alos introduce 200 new salaried GP posts over five years as well as 200 practice nurses and medical secretaries.

'This weeks budget has shown once again that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil cannot be trusted to make the right choices for the ordinary people of Ireland. Sinn Féín is On Your Side and would bring a radically different approach to government'.

Líon na nDaoine ar thrallaithe ardaithe faoi cheathair - Ó Clochartaigh

Tháinig ardú faoi cheathair ar na figiúirí de dhaoine ag fanacht ar thrallaithe le deich mbliana anuas in Ospidéal Ollscoile na Gaillimhe agus in Ospidéal Portiuncula agus tá na fadhbanna sa chóras sláinte atá againn san Iarthar ag dul in olcas seachas ag feabhsú dar le Seanadóir de chuid Shinn Féin Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Ag labhairt dó sa Seanad inniu dúirt an Seanadóir do Ghaillimh Thiar- Maigh Eo Theas:

'Léiríonn figiúirí de dhaoine atá ar thrallaithe agus ar bhardanna atá foilsithe ag an INMO gur tháinig méadú faoi cheathair ar na figiúirí in Ospidéal Portiuncula agus in Ospidéal Ollscoile na Gaillimhe do 2017 i gcomparáid le 2006.

'Ag féachaint ar an tréimhse Eanáir- Lunasa 2006 bhí 1190 duine i gceist in Ospidéal Ollscoile na Gaillimhe agus 306 i bPort. Don tréimhse chéanna i 2017 bhí ceithre oiread daoine i gceist, 4331 in Ospidéal Ollscoile na Gaillimhe agus 1300 in Ospidéal Portiuncula.

'Anuas ar sin ta 101,261 duine ag fanacht ar liostaí feithimh d'othair chónaithe agus lae in ospidéil de chuid SAOLTA faoi láthair.

'Tá 50,496 acu seo in Ospidéal Ollscoile na Gaillimhe, 9549 in Ospidéal Ginearálta Mhaigh Eo agus 3,915 in Ospidéal Portiuncula. Maidir le grúpa SAOLTA tá 10652 ag fanacht le 18 mí nó níos mó.

'Theip ar rialtas i ndiaidh rialtais dul i ngleic leis na géarchéimeanna éagsúla sna seirbhísí sláinte. Tá siad ag cliseadh ar mhuintir an iarthair.

'Níl leigheas ar an scéal seo i mbuiséad na seachtaine seo ar chor ar bith. Dhéanfadh buiséad malartach Shinn Féin difir mór. Chuireamar €503 mhilliún breise ar fáil do na seirbhísí seo, i bhfad níos mó ná an €289 milliún a sholáthraigh Fianna Fáil agus an Rialtas.

'Murab ionann agus an Rialtas seo tá fís dár seirbhísí sláinte ag Sinn Féin agus d'fhoilsíomar na beartais atá againn chun dul i ngleic leis an ngéarchéim atá ann sna hionad taisme agus éigeandála lena n-áirítear líon na leapacha a mhéadú le 500 leaba agus trí na leapacha ar fad a dúnadh a oscailt arís.

'Méadóimid líon na n-altraí le 500 altra agus cnáimhseach breise gach bliain thar thréimhse 5 bliana agus earcóimid 800 comhairleoir breise in éineacht le rúnaithe leighis agus tabharfaimid faoi fhadhbanna foirne eile sa chóras sláinte.

'Anuas ar sin beidh méadú 30% ar líon na n-uaireanta cúnaimh baile thar thrí bliana agus méadu 20%ar an soláthair don tseirbhís cúnamih faoisimh do dhaoine aosta.

'Cuirfimid ar fáil 200 post nua do dhochtúirí teaghlaigh le tuarastal, thar thréimhse cúig bliana mar aon le 200 altra agus rúnaí leighis.

'Chonacthas sa bhuiséad seo arís nach féidir muinín a chur i bhFine Gael nó Fianna Fáil chun an rogha ceart a dhéanamh ar mhaithe le gnáthmhuintir na tíre. Tá Sinn Féin ar do thaobh agus bheadh athrú radacach le rialtas Shinn Féin i gcumhacht.'
