Susan Thurman, a critical care physician assistant, and Dr. Tyler Miluski, one of the department's internal medicine residents, were nominated to receive the tickets as a way to recognize their teamwork, outstanding patient care and tireless work ethics during the COVID-19 pandemic.
'Tyler was nominated for his heroic efforts to support other residents during their time of need and for providing the highest quality patient care throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,' said Dr. Thomas Ma, department chair. 'Susan has worked tirelessly at the frontlines of the pandemic and she consistently goes above and beyond to ensure our patients receive top-notch care.'
Thurman decided to take her daughter, Caryn, with her to the game, which turned out to be the perfect gift for Caryn, who just turned 16.
To make the day even more special, Susan's father, Dr. Donald Martin, professor emeritus of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at Penn State, flew Thurman and her daughter out to State College for the game in a Cessna plane.
'From the contest itself (the 300th win at Beaver Stadium!) to the weather and the camaraderie with fans, it was an absolutely perfect day filled with memories we will never forget,' Thurman said. 'Most valuable was the time we spent together … Being a teenage girl during a pandemic is life-altering in itself, which is made even more challenging when your parent is taking care of the stricken. This day helped give Caryn back a piece of what she has been missing and no value can be placed on that.'
