Join No Mow May to help pollinators!

What is No Mow May?

No Mow May is a campaign that asks residents to stop mowing their lawns for the month of May, to create habitat for pollinators, like bees, who become active this time of year. During May, Monona does not enforce the tall grass ordinance to ensure you can participate and protect pollinators!

Joining No Mow May allows you to domore by doing less: to participate, all you have to do is stop mowing your lawn for the Month of May!Yard signs are available for purchase at City Hall for $15.

Why is No Mow May important?

Not mowing your lawn during the spring months creates habitat for pollinators like bees and butterflies. These pollinators are leaving hibernation and becoming active in the spring and need habitat to thrive, but typical mowed lawns have very little biodiversity to support pollinators. Allowing your lawn to grow during May can help pollinators as they come out of hibernation.

Researchers studying lawns during No Mow May in Appleton, WI found that households who participated in No Mow May in 2021 had almost five times as many pollinators as lawns that had been mowed, and typically had higher biodiversity levels too.
