Making the Health Care System WorkSM, the online digital magazine from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK), explores a community-based approach to tackling economic and health disparities in its latest article, 'Building Communities for Better Health.'
We interviewed the leader of Purpose Built Communities, an organization that has worked to transform an Atlanta neighborhood from impoverished and blighted, into a safe and healthy place to live.
We also discuss the work of Growing Together, a Tulsa organization and a BCBSOK community partner. We interviewed Dr.Derek Robinson, an emergency medicine doctor and vice president of enterprise quality and accreditation for BCBSOK.
'Building Communities for Better Health' explores data by multiple studies that reflect the adverse effects of poverty on health. According to Dr.Robinson, while the physical effects of poverty may be limited to certain ethnic, income or geographic groups, their impact can be felt throughout the U.S. economy.
