Opinion: Regulatory hurdles hinder efforts to hire and retain global talent

More than 3,800 immigrants from countries such as Afghanistan, Ukraine and Africa flocked to St. Louis in 2023. Due in part to regional initiatives including the St. Louis Mosaic Project, services provided by the International Institute of St. Louis and the Office of New Americans, the metropolitan area has been lauded as one of the best in the United States for welcoming these new arrivals and helping them succeed.

For local business owners facing a shortage of skilled workers, this influx of international talent could help fill a critical need. However, hiring and retaining them is far more complicated than it should be.
