Change still needed two years after murder of George Floyd

Des Moines, Iowa - Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement on the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd by former police officer Derek Chauvin:

"Two years ago today, the murder of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers triggered a nationwide reckoning on police violence in our country.

"No matter our race, zip code or background, we all know that George Floyd's community and his family deserve justice. But, in the wake of his murder, some politicians continue to try to make us fear one another, dividing us with the same old politics. Then, they deny communities across the country the quality schools, affordable healthcare and vibrant communities we actually need to thrive and be safe.

"Our hearts go out to George Floyd's family and those who witnessed his murder. To honor his memory, we can and must change policing by calling on our leaders to deliver a new standard for public safety and accountability.

"To achieve true justice, we need a government that cares for us, funds our futures, and delivers real safety by providing the housing, quality schools and healthcare that we need."
