OFFICERS DISREGARD THEIR SAFETY WHILE REMOVING SUSPECTED DRUNK DRIVER FROM VEHICLE

**Update** The driver, 34-year-old Gregory Womack of Lincoln was arrested for DUI.

At about 11:20 pm on Sunday (June 18) a vehicle struck a pole at 8th and H Streets and came to a stop in the field behind the Lincoln Police Department. Officers arrived quickly and found that power lines were down in the street, arcing, and that a grass fire had started near the vehicle. Officers saw that the driver was still in the vehicle, apparently unconscious. The fire had reached the vehicle and officers had to extinguish some of it with a fire extinguisher to gain access to the driver. After breaking out the driver's side window they were able to pull him to safety. He was found to have significant injuries, was transported to a local hospital, and will likely be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

'The officers are to be commended for their quick and heroic actions', said Chief Doug Lee, adding that he was 'very proud of the work they do every day, and especially during incidents like this.'

The accident caused a power outage in the surrounding area for approximately one hour.
