Cicilline, Buck: Facebook Papers are Further Evidence the Congress Must Act

Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law, and Congressman Ken Buck (R-CO), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law, released the following joint statement following the publication of multiple news stories regarding the Facebook Papers.

"The release of the 'Facebook Papers' provides even more powerful evidence that Facebook will continue to put profit over consumer safety. We cannot continue to let this behavior or Facebook's monopoly go unchecked-Congress must act now to hold Facebook and other tech giants accountable and create more choice for consumers online. The Judiciary Committee has already approved our bipartisan six bill package that will allow and create competition, now we need all of Congress to join us in this effort."
The Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law conducted a 16-month long bipartisan investigation into the state of competition in the digital economy beginning in June 2019. As part of a top-to-bottom review of the market, the Subcommittee examined the dominance of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google, and their business practices to determine how their monopoly power affects our economy and our democracy. Additionally, the Subcommittee performed a review of existing antitrust laws, competition policies, and current enforcement levels to assess whether they are adequate to address market power and anticompetitive conduct in digital markets.
Following the release of the report, Congressmen Cicilline and Buck announced their bipartisan legislative agenda to expand opportunities for consumers, workers, and small business owners by holding unregulated Big Tech monopolies accountable for anti-competitive conduct through a bipartisan six bill package drafted by members on the Antitrust Subcommittee.
