Number of under three year olds in day-care centres increased by 77.0% within ten years

Vienna,2021-07-16 - In the kindergarten year 2020/21, a total of 70 750 children under three years of age attended a childcare facility, according to current figures by Statistics Austria. In a ten-year comparison, this corresponds to an increase of 77.0% (+30 769 children). Every fourth child (27.6%) under three years of age was already in day-care, in the kindergarten year 2010/11 it was only every sixth child. Increases in the childcare rate were observed in all federal provinces. An all-time high was reported for the age group of three- to five-year-olds with 246 877 children enrolled in kindergarten, compared to 2010/11 this is an increase of 12.6% (+27 5890 children).
