Here for parents: Why Oracle works for families

There's a saying that it takes a village to raise a child and that's what parents find when they work at Oracle. We're quite a bit bigger than the average village though-more than 160,000 people the last time we checked! Still, we do our best to hold to values of collaboration, flexibility, and understanding when it comes to empowering parents.

We spoke to people across Oracle about balancing work and home life while making the most of Oracle's award-winning range of supports and benefits.

Ralph Myron Piccio, a consulting practice director with Oracle NetSuite describes the past eight years as a rollercoaster.

"I haven't stayed this long with any company throughout my professional career, nor have I had as much of a challenging, fulfilling yet fun experience at

the same time!" he explains.

Energy

"I have tremendous energy when going to work, likewise, being happy at work brings me home the same kind of energy-it's a circle, not a balance. I bring the same energy and feeling of fulfilment to my family, whether it's as simple as picking up my kid from school, studying or playing together."

Mark Carpo, one of our principal consultants, takes a different view. He prefers to manage his time on the job so he can switch gears completely when he gets home.

"It's challenging to balance my responsibilities at work and to my family, especially since this is my first experience as both a husband and a father," he explains.

"The ideal solution, for me, is to strictly manage my time during work hours to ensure that everything is completed for the day. Then, I devote the rest of my day to taking care of my child."

Peace of mind

Working at Oracle means he has the flexibility to bridge the gap while knowing that office life isn't going to spill over into family time.

"Achieving the perfect balance that gives us peace of mind is difficult. However, for me, ending a fully loaded work day by playing and seeing my child's smile and hearing their laughter takes away all the stress."

Jian Yung Ang appreciates this flexibility, too-and he frequently takes it one step further by working in different locations throughout the week. It's a welcome option in his dynamic role as an enterprise accounts manager.

Flexible work arrangements

"I have a toddler who is 20 months and flexible work arrangements give me more options on how to balance between work and life! I get to plan my day and make the most out of it without the confines of commuting and logistics," he explains.

This allows him to work from cafés, co-working spaces, or even his home office as needed. "This truly gives me the time back to minimize transitions between work and home life," he adds.

What matters to Jian also matters to Oracle and he is constantly impressed by how much he can tune his working day to deliver as a parent and a colleague.

Very understanding

Pamelyn Chong meanwhile, knows better than most what parents want from employers. As one of Oracle's principal talent advisors and a mother of two girls, she sees both sides of the coin.

"I think the most important for me has been having a very understanding manager and team-this is something I have been blessed with over the last seven years," she shares. "The other aspect that has helped greatly for me as a working parent is the flexibility to work from home- allowing me to care for my young baby in between my work and calls."

Flexibility matters and she values how weaving it into the workday allows people to shine in their roles at home and in the office.

"I think it is quite a fine line in juggling both work and the family-something which I am still learning! A typical day is a mad rush in the morning getting the older one ready for school whilst still tending to the younger one as both of them usually wake at the same time."

Feeling the benefit

Oracle's impressive benefits program features parental leave as standard and forms part of our focus on well-being for all employees-not just those with children. Benefits across retirement, health, and professional development reflect that.

We also encourage our people to take on paid volunteering opportunities close to their hearts. After all, work and personal life should complement each other and this inspires our people to innovate in ways unique to them.

Our approach to leave matters, too. Ralph appreciates the access to personal and sick days for life's ups and downs with kids-as well as an inclusive culture that embraces their use. "The ability to use them without any regret, without any weight on your conscience and with a great peace of mind that your team has your back whenever you are out of office is amazing," he shares.

Breathing room

Mark agrees and points out how this contributes to wellness in general. "It provides employees with breathing room from any work-related stress," he adds.

Health benefits are also a huge plus here. "When any of us fall sick," Pamelyn shares, "we are assured that the doctor visits are covered-especially for the kids as they would typically fall ill more often."

Children even get the chance to make new friends at events throughout the year, Jian mentions: "The employee engagement events that get hosted are always an opportunity for the kids to connect and meet others!"

And who knows? Maybe those children could grow up to be Oracle parents themselves someday! They've already seen firsthand the flexibility their parents enjoy when it comes to family life and know they'll be treated with the same respect.
