SAN ANTONIO (September 9, 2021) - Metro Health will offer $100 H-E-B gift cards starting at the end of September as part of efforts to increase the number of San Antonio and Bexar County residents who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
During its regularly scheduled Sept. 9 A session meeting, City Council approved the purchase of the gift cards from H-E-B for $1 million for Metro Health's COVID-19 Vaccination Incentive Plan. Metro Health sought and received approval to use federal monies from the Immunizations COVID-19 Round 4 Grant Fund.
The gift cards will be given to individuals who receive either the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine or the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at any Metro Health vaccine site. People are eligible to receive a gift card only if they started their vaccine series after July 31. People who are already fully vaccinated are not eligible for the incentive.
'Getting vaccinated is our best tool to end this pandemic and we believe this incentive will drive more people to roll up their sleeves to get a COVID-19 vaccine,' said Metro Health Director Claude A. Jacob. 'We will do whatever we can in this fight against COVID-19 to help keep our residents safe and to prevent the virus from spreading further in our community.'
Metro Health selected H-E-B for its gift card incentives because of its familiarity and accessibility among residents, including underserved and high-risk individuals, Jacob added.
The gift card incentive is not the first time the City of San Antonio has used incentives to encourage people to get vaccinated. In May, Metro Health partnered with Six Flags Fiesta Texas to provide 20,000 complimentary tickets to the theme park. Also in July, Metro Health partnered with Spurs Sports & Entertainment to host vaccine pop-up clinics at AT&T Center and Toyota Field where two Spurs 10-game season packages were given away.
For a list of vaccine pop-up clinics, visit www.covid19.sanantonio.gov or call 311; option 8. The public can also get vaccinated at the Alamodome drive-thru clinic from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday-Friday. No appointment necessary.
